Today, while on the subway ride back home from work, I watched We Are Lady Parts, which is a British TV sitcom directed by Nida Manzoor. It is about a British punk rock band that consists of entirely Muslim women named Lady Parts, who have the challenges of trying to balance cultural expectations with their band passions.
In the band, there are five members, all Muslim women. Amina is the band's new lead guitar player after joining an audition while being a microbiology PhD student. Saira, who wears tattoos and is the only member not wearing a hijab, is the lead singer who is also a halal butcher in her neighborhood. Aisha (Ayesha) is the band's drummer while also works as an Uber driver, in which she drives a Volkswagen Golf as part of her job. Bisma, is the band's bass guitarist while she sells her artworks in a market stall. Lastly, Momtaz (aka Taz), is the band's manager who wears a Niqab and sells lingerie for cheap.
During the day, the members go to attend classes or work their respective jobs. At night, they gather for band rehearsal.
In the first episode, it shows that Amina is conflicted because she wants to find a husband while having a zeal to join Lady Parts as a guitarist. Amina joined the audition because her brother hand her a flyer, in which she went down to the butcher's shop meet him. When Amina is at the butcher's, that was when Saira recognizes her from an elementary school performance where she played guitar and vomited due to the stage fright.
Towards the end of the episode, the band planned to track down Amira at the community fundraiser because they knew she teaches guitar to the children. As part of the plan, Momtaz moved the advertising stand where she is hiding behind, causing Amira to get stage fright again and accidentally vomited in a donation bucket.
