Recently, I just watched Despicable Me 4 with my old school friends and what caught my eye is that this is the first movie in the Despicable Me franchise that have K-pop songs played. The K-pop songs are BTS' "Dynamite" and BLACKPINK's "Boombaya". In addition to the K-pop songs played, a new teen character called Poppy is also seen holding a phone with BTS casing.
Because these songs were very popular, especially during my secondary school years of 2018 and 2019, I find the presence of these songs in the movie evokes a sense of reminiscence to these times. Also, because I enjoyed the movie, there is one article that I would like to share in this blog regarding a collaboration by Illumination and BTS for their product and merchandise release.

Illumination, Universal Products and Experiences and BIGHIT MUSIC have announced a global collaboration with Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 and BTS to commemorate the upcoming theatrical film release.
The collaboration is in celebration of new Despicable Me 4 character, Poppy Prescott, who identifies as a member of BTS ARMY. This connection is highlighted in the limited merchandise capsule featuring vibrant Minions x BTS mash-up art inspired by BTS’ iconic outfits from their 2021 hit single Permission to Dance and the BTS DM4 Pop-Up experiential event taking place in Los Angeles, Seoul, and Tokyo.
Available for pre-order June 19 – July 1 on the Weverse U.S. shop, the limited capsule collection includes a cross-category assortment of apparel and accessories that embody the dynamic personalities of both the Minions characters and BTS. The collection features tees, hoodies, sweats, and totes with bespoke mash-up art with BTS stylized in Minion form.
The apparel and accessories collection can be purchased as well at the upcoming retail pop-ups in Los Angeles, Seoul, and Tokyo and will be coming soon to Nordstrom and Urban Outfitters stores and online. An Entertainment Earth exclusive Funko Pop! Collectible 7-Pack will also be available for pre-order on Friday, June 21.
To coincide with the merchandise launch, Despicable Me 4 will be popping up in Los Angeles, Seoul and Tokyo for a retail experience highlighting the DM4 x BTS capsule collection. At the BTS DM4 pop-ups, fans can explore Poppy Prescott’s Tree House film set recreations, interactive activations, and a fully themed retail experience featuring BTS members in Minion form, all inspired by Illumination’s newest film.
