Watched Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 with my old school friends

DISCLAIMER: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS TO THE INSIDE OUT 2 MOVIE. IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCH INSIDE OUT 2, PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS POST!!!

On the 15th June, I've watched Inside Out 2 at Shaw Theatres Lido with my Pathlight alumni friends. This movie outing is organized by one of them, who will be celebrating his 21st birthday this month. There are 10 people, including me and that birthday boy, watching the movie as part of the birthday celebrations.

About the movie

The sequel continues from the original Inside Out film, when Riley turns 13 and enters high school. This is when the current five emotions from the first movie created an object on the pedestal called Sense of Self. The Sense of Self is a masterpiece that are made up a pool of memory orbs connected to glowing strings that made up Riley's personality as she enters teenage years. The pool of memories can be accessed via an elevator from the headquarters.

During the night before Riley's school hockey camp with her best friends, the the puberty alarm was sounded off, which is followed by a group of workers barging into the headquarters to perform a renovation to accommodate the four new emotions - Anxiety, Ennui, Envy and Embarrassment.

The new emotions and existing emotions were getting along quite well, until when Riley is trying to qualify for her school's hockey team Fire Hawks. Joy thinks that Riley should just take it easy and have fun, while Anxiety wants her to win a spot in the team and to make new friends.

Four new emotions
Because of this dispute, Anxiety dumps the current Sense of Self to the back of Riley's memory via a vacuum pipe, as well as bottling up the old five emotions and sent to the Memory Vault, as she felt that she needs to be in charge of Riley. Micromanaging? I know. Afterwards, she and the other new emotions then create a new Sense of Self by dumping those bad memories into the pool. This had caused Riley to think that she needs to be friends with Val at the expense of her two other best friends.

"We are suppressed emotions" - the five emotions when they are bottled up before being sent to the Memory Vault

Meanwhile, after the old emotions managed to escape from the Memory Vault, Sadness went back to the headquarters via a recall tube while the other old emotions tries to go to the back of Riley's mind to retrieve her old Sense of Self. After successfully making it back, that was around the time where Sadness stole Ennui's phone because she is unable to prevent Riley from breaking into her coach's office.

Riley's old Sense of Self was finally retrieved after climbing up the mountain of bad memories. However, the old emotions (excluding Sadness) were stuck and does not have a way back until Anger devised a plan with Pouchy to use dynamite to incite an avalanche so that they can ride back to the headquarters. This had caused these bad memories to spill into the pool, corrupting Riley's Sense of Self.

Then, during Riley's hockey game, she was forced into a penalty box as Anxiety is having full control and creates a wind storm in the headquarters, causing Riley to suffer from a heavy panic attack and to keep telling herself "I'm not good enough" over and over again. After the other four old emotions were back, Joy told off Anxiety that she needs to be taking it easy and stop micro-managing Riley.

Afterwards, Joy placed the original Sense of Self on the pedestal, but it still failed to stop the storm that caused Riley's panic attack. That was when she removed the original Sense of Self and let the flood of memories to gradually create a newer, more complex third one. When the new Sense of Self was created, Riley managed to calm down and apologized to Bree and Grace for how she behaved.

Towards the ending, Anxiety now has a corner in the headquarters that she can chillax, while Riley continues to find it easier to balance being friends with Val and keeping tabs on her 2 best friends. Embarrassment becomes less shy, and the rest of the emotions start welcoming their expending family, although Nostalgia still remains in the Basement like in the rest of the movie. After having a new Sense of Self for a period of time, Riley smiled as she gets a text about her potential recruitment at Fire Hawks.

What I enjoyed/can relate to about this movie

One point in this movie that I liked is when one of Riley's schoolmates mistakenly said that Riley is from Michigan, when she is actually from Minnesota. However, due to anxiety of joining her high school hockey team, she just went along with "being from Michigan" as she does not have it in her to correct her schoolmate.

Another point about the movie that I enjoyed is when Ennui panicked when she lost her phone due to it being stolen by Sadness. How do the new emotions knew if it was Sadness who stole the phone? They realized that the console was blue when that happened. Sadness does it because she would not want Riley to break into her coach's office as she felt that Riley wasn't behaving like herself.

The emotion that I can relate the most is Ennui. This is because there are times in life where I just couldn't be bothered to do something, just like Ennui, but in my case, it is ordering food delivery instead of going out when lazy or not in the mood. Sounds like the fact where Ennui is the only emotion that uses her phone to control the console remotely instead of physically controlling it like the other emotions.
